Imagine a small black box and a couple of cables. You open the bonnet of your car, locate the correct plugs, and plug it in. Secure the box somewhere safe in the engine bay. Instantly you have more power, torque and better fuel economy. Diesel tuning boxes make all these claims and more - so what are they? Are they really a viable alternative to a custom remap? At its heart a tuning box is an incredibly simple device, which has existed in various forms for many years, but always using the same principle to achieve the power increase.

They do this by taking advantage of the Closed Loop Control systems in the engine. Take a look at our blog on engine control later. A tuning box is designed to intercept and change signals back to the ECU, to fool it into making changes which result in more fuel being injected. The easiest sensor to fool in order to guarantee more fuel being injected is the rail pressure sensor, and this is the one most tuning boxes target.

They are usually placed between the rail pressure sensor and the ECU to reduce the reading the ECU receives, in turn making the engine run with increased rail pressure. Increased rail pressure means the engine will get more fuel and make more power.

This all sounds great, but there are two main problems. Inside these fancy shiny boxes, usually there is nothing more than a resistor costing pence from any electronics supplier. It is this resistor which fools the ECU into a false reading. The spec of this resistor is critically important to whether the system is safe. If there is only a mild increase in pressure, then it is unlikely that it will cause any damage.

If that resistor value is wrong however, it can cause increased wear or a catastrophic failure of the high pressure fuel pump or injectors.

These are some of the most expensive components in a diesel engine, and repairs can run into the thousands. The second problem with fooling the engine in this way is that it will throw out all the complex calculations in the ECU which keep all the systems running correctly. Many of these tuning boxes claim better fuel economy - but a major reason for this is that the engine is being fooled into delivering more fuel than the ECU actually is aware of.

This means you are very likely to see an improvement on your dashboard display, but may not see the same improvement at the fuel station. In a box like this, you will need to plug the box in between two sensors usually rail pressure and boost pressure and the box will then fool the ECU into injecting more fuel and running a higher boost pressure.

In reality there is a limit to what these boxes can do, and it's very easy to tell what they are really capable of by which sensors you have to plug them into. The car pulled noticeably better and felt much nicer to drive. The next job was to try out the maximum performance settingwhere everything is turned up to a safe maximum. The car felt totally different, and literally pulled like a train. The boost seemed to come in a lot sooner and more smoothly and it felt like we were driving on a wave of Torque.

We may sound a little crazy here but even at the max the fuel economy still seemed to be slightly better than what we are used to, probably because you needed less throttle to make the same progress.

Obviously if you drive it hard your economy will drop but your miles per gallon will increase! We haven't tried out all of the options yet, there are 7 to choose from and we really like the performance one. For our daily commute we'll opt for program 4 which gives a really good mix of power and economy. For holiday drives and long journeys we'll switch it to program 1 and get the benefit of the economy.

If you look at the rolling road printout to the right click it to see the full PDF you'll see the improvement to the Torque Curve across the entire rev range which really has to be driven to be appreciated. We could probably have got a higher peak figure with a custom remap but we certainly wouldn't want to sacrifice a wide power band to hit a pub bragging rights figure and put strain on the turbo and engine to get there.

We are very happy with the TDI-Tuning box and can definitely recommend it - it does everything the makers claim acting like a proper piggyback ECU. It can be viewed as a remap by post, so you don't have any of the inconvenience of taking the car in for a remap.

With the common rail diesel, you have two basic choices of how to accomplish this. So which is the better option? Honestly, there are pros and cons to both, not considering the price. The higher pressures wear out the injectors faster — this is a common-sense fact. At the end of the day, there is no way to pinpoint exactly how much faster your injectors are wearing out, but again, it is common sense. Better performance and fuel economy are the Holy Grail for every car company. If just increasing rail pressure delivers better diesel performance, why do they not just increase it? Reliability and lifespan of the injector. The Good: These chips give you a lot more capability to tune, and inflict a bit less wear on the injection system.

The added ability to tune each injector is metered out to the microsecond means more horsepower and top-end performance, but not better fuel economy. The Bad: These chips are more expensive. More expensive to buy, and more expensive to install and tune correctly.

It is worth mentioning here and covered in more detail in a future post that any increase in diesel performance also increases the forces exerted on the pistons, rods, bearings, etc.

These engines inject after TDC, which means that pressure is building inside the combustion chamber as the piston is already on the down-stroke, causing less strain on the rods and bearings than a petrol engine, which combusts at the top of the stroke. Bottom line: If you are after more than just some mid-range increases and better economy, choose a chip that holds the injector open longer and increases boost pressure as well.

Choosing the right shop to install and tune this chip to your ride is a key. End of the day, if you want more power, and take steps to minimise the risk, tuning can be the way to go. If outright reliability is more important to you than increased diesel performance, then stay away.

As a side note, one critical aspect of increasing diesel performance and tuning your CRI vehicle is making sure the replacement parts you install are up to the task.When looking for ways to make your engine produce more power, installing an engine performance chip is often sold as a quick and easy route to huge power gains.

The truth behind these chips can really vary depending on the car it is installed in, any modifications present, and how the chip was tuned in the first place. That being said, ECU tuning is an effective tool for gaining usable, drivable horsepower if you do it right.

Regardless of these factors, there are few things you should understand beforehand before installing a chip into your car. Sometimes reliability is more important than single digit power gains. Many chip tuning companies advertise great power gains with dynamometer-proven results.

This means that you are sacrificing overall performance for slightly increased power output during a specific fraction of the time, and it definitely will not make your car faster.

Regardless of chip used, power gains are found by altering fuel maps and ignition tables. These changes remove much of the safety and flexibility found in a stock car, and because of this, premium grade fuel and sometimes even an octane booster is generally required for safe operation.

Keep in mind these additional expenses when purchasing a performance chip. Depending on the type of chip used, the method of tuning employed, as well as the car it is installed in, it is possible for the ECU to relearn its old tune. While chips can provide noticeable power gains, they are rarely without tradeoffs. These gains can increase the cost of operation and require changes in useable fuel as well as aftermarket octane boosters.
